“It is the desperate moment that we discover that this empire, which had seemed to us the sum of all wonders, is an endless, formless ruin, that corruption’s gangrene has spread too far to be healed by our scepter, that the triumph over enemy sovereigns has made us the heirs of their long undoing.” - Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities
Inanimate Altruism is an ongoing series exploring subtle symptoms of our failed human empire and our cultural attitude toward nature. Like citizens in a besieged city on it’s final days, we know our world is burning, we know it is damaged beyond repair, we know that the end is coming, but we’re powerless to change it. Instead our worst qualities have won, and in our insatiable thirst for more, we’ve sacrificed our own planet, and future generations will have to pay for it.
